In the state of Utah there is a license required of those working as security guards. In order to even qualify for a Utah security guard license, a person needs to be at least 18, and they must have a valid social security card and driver’s license. If a person has met these requirements then they need to complete at least 24 hours of in classroom security guard training with a properly certified Utah security guard trainer. The course must be passed with a minimum score of 80%. Also, a person will need to pass criminal background checks, drug testing and FBI fingerprinting or they will not qualify for a Utah security guard license. The application fee for the license is $100, and the application itself is 6 pages long.

In the application for a Utah Security Guard a person must sign an affidavit confirming that they are a US citizen and that they will follow the rules and regulations laid out by Utah for security guards. There is also a questionnaire as part of the application. You will need to include proof of completion of your security guard training program. The last page of the application is a detailed checklist, for your convenience, of every item which needs to be completed and submitted for the application to be processed efficiently and effectively.

For armed guards the application is the same, however there are more requirements of people who are wishing to become armed guards in Utah. They also need to complete 12 additional hours of training on top of the 24 hours required of unarmed guards. 6 of the additional 12 hours are class work regarding laws and safety, the other 6 hours are spent at a firing range becoming familiar with the weapon which may be used on the job as an armed security guard.
